Healthier Eating Before, During & After Pregnancy

I think back to my mother sharing with me that there were days that she drank sugar water to produce enough breast milk to feed me.  I also think back to when I started focusing on taking charge of my health at 13 years old because I did not want diabetes to be a part of my future like the elders in my home. I actually stuck with this until I was honorably discharged from the US Army Reserves in 1999.  After that I was more focused on completing my Masters in Occupational Therapy in 2002 than eating healthy.  I just ate what was easily available.

Fast forward to 2005 when I refocused on my health, started training as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and became my first client.  I followed an elimination diet and did lots of detox and colon cleansing to start.  I then followed a maintenance process which included increasing my intake of plant based foods while crowding out processed foods and animal based foods.  I felt really good and wanted to keep that feeling going.

I also started thinking about carrying my future child in this healthy body even though years earlier I was told by a doctor that it would not be a part of my future.  I had a different opinion about that.  I kept my eye on my prize and took action to achieve that goal.  I became pregnant in December of 2010 and was so happy.  I also felt a sense of calm, sitting in the satisfaction that I had achieved my goal of becoming pregnant.  I am beaming right now just thinking about it.

I wanted to give my growing baby the best opportunity to grow in a healthy womb so, at 4 1/2 months pregnant, my husband and I drove from Smyrna, GA to Houston, TX to be trained as Raw Vegan Chefs so we could add that food preparation skill to our repertoire.  We prepared some delicious dishes and our instructors enjoyed all that we prepared under Iron Chef conditions using only the ingredients we were given as our final test.  We subsequently brought others into our home to teach them what we learned and to have meals with us.  This new skill helped me to consume live food meals 90% of the time during my pregnancy.

After giving birth to our daughter at a beautiful home water birth in September 2011, I was able to continue with my way of eating and breastfed her initially with use of a breast shield since my nipples were inverted but they came out within 4 days and she was able to latch on beautifully.  She breastfed until she was 3 years and 1 month old – she weaned herself.  At one month old we added homemade formula to nourish her because I was working outside of the home.  When she was ready for food, I bought bottles of discounted baby food so I could dump them in the garbage.  I used the glass bottles to store the food I made for her.  She is a now a healthy, strong and energetic 6 year old who classifies her foods based on good energy food vs bad energy food.
